"The Beautiful and the Sublime," Bruce Sterling

It is easy to admire someone of grace and elegance, to have one's eye caught by the sleek drape of a skirt or by a sidelong glance across the room. In certain circles it is possible to live through an entire affair which is composed of nothing more than brittle witticisms. But the love of the spirit comes when the dark yin of the soul is exposed in the lover's sight; vanities, insecurities, those tender crevices that hold the potential of real pain.

Greet her at the station and hold her in your arms until she knows, really knows, that she's finally home.

Once in the flat, peel her out of her work clothes. Make her lie down on the couch, and then serve one of her favourite meals before cuddling up to watch Deep Space Nine.

Later, lay her on the bed, stretched out like a canvas; restraints may be necessary. Paint her -- delicately, intricately -- with chocolate. Remind her of her own silhouette, of her skin and bones and blood. Show her with every brush stroke that she is, already, an exquisite work of art

Then... clean her up. Vigorously.

Twice.

*Not hypothetical in the least.

I miss Doctor Who night. I miss Avatar night.

The only problem is, I live in Orange County now. Not only does this make it hard on my guest list, it means my weekday commute gets me home rather late. So by the time Friday night rolls around, I want date night with [info]joshroby, not a house full of people. I could do a handful of Friday nights for one show or another, but not the continuing stream that it used to be.

So then I thought: what about a Saturday marathon? That will work once for Avatar (seeing as we all need a recap plus the four new episodes), but Sci-Fi is airing Doctor Who only two weeks behind the BBC. It seems redundant to have people over to watch episodes they've already seen, particularly when part of what I enjoyed most was everyone seeing it for the first time.

Then there's the Farscape viewing that never quite got off the ground. That would be fun, too. [info]joshroby and I are currently plowing through Deep Space Nine, which got me thinking about rewatching older shows.

There's just not enough time to do it all, much less share it with friends. Meh.

I got horribly sunburned at [info]trevick's graduation, all over my back, due to a faulty can of sunscreen. The worst bits are still very tender, but I'm starting to peel, so that's a relief. I suspect the weekend was also a litmus test of my ability to stand [info]joshroby's family for an extended period, as they are all very close and don't want a new significant other to keep him away from them like the last one. I love having a big-but-close family nearby and I happen to like them as people, so when his mum asked how I was handling spending so much time with them, he told her the truth. "We'll keep her," she said. :D

Now, however, it's three weeks to NSC. Yes, I know I said last year was, in fact, my last year, but money issues have brought me back. I'm limiting my exposure to the insane board of directors, which has helped, but there's still enough stupidity going around to spare.

Not feeling so hot the last couple of days, either. Heavy fatigue -- I laid down for a "short nap" and woke up three hours later, then crashed again when I got home and slept through the night. STILL tired this morning. I've also got some weird off-schedule cramping. But I have a constant thirst, though, so I think maybe I'm just dehydrated.

Our trip back to Nashville was pretty awesome. Everyone loved [info]joshroby and no one recognized me. The weight loss is one thing, but apparently being relaxed and happy totally changes how you look. My stepfather nearly fell over when he saw me. More than one person said, "I always thought you were just that kind of person, high-strung and stressed all the time." The ones who knew better, like my parents and [info]literalgirl, remember me ten years ago and are over the moon to have me back the way I used to be.

Who's Queen?
Caught up on Doctor Who! Working on Torchwood and Ashes to Ashes!!

Not this weekend, however, as it's off to Disneyland tonight to meet [info]joshroby's cousins who are visiting from out of town (assuming they'll still be there by the time I get off work), and then RenFaire tomorrow with Bolt. I will probably need to spend all of Sunday sleeping and writing. Oi.

Next weekend we're flying to Nashville for a family event, and then the weekend after that it's up to Santa Barbara for [info]trevick's graduation.

I love that we make plans, and have plans, and then do what we had planned. It's so... real. Not sure how else to explain it.

Who's Queen?
(Yes, I know Doctor Who started this past week. No, I haven't seen it. I won't let myself get too far behind, though, I promise!)

Headaches have disappeared, along with my inability to keep any semblance of an energy level past 4pm. It's kind of amazing, and I am so very angry at my pediatrician for twenty years of having to live like that.

Have started a new diet (and by diet I mean "a way of eating", not starving myself) which consists of more plant protein, less animal protein, lots of fish, and whole milk instead of skim/lowfat. It might seem backwards, but my weight loss has doubled in the last two weeks. I'm a little freaked out, actually.

My paladin also hit level 60 in WoW and is over halfway to her epic charger. It's full steam ahead to Outland and level 70 now!

And, since my week is not complete without some informative meme regarding my personality (nicked from [info]bansidhe:

I've got two pairs coming to me (links fixed now).

The glasses I ordered at Costco the day of my exam:

The second pair I ordered today from Zenni Optical (thank you, [info]mynuet!):

Another picture! )

No idea yet which pair will be my main, or if I'll switch between both as I feel like it. I'm really looking forward to being able to function at 100% after 3pm, though. I've never experienced that.

Optometrist confirmed mild astigmatism. This would finally explain the periodic headaches I've had my entire life, which my pediatrician told me was just stress. My eye muscles have been compensating until now, which is why I always passed the vision test without being dilated. Now, they can't cover as well (hence the headaches every single day for a week), and when that became apparent in this exam, he dilated me and found the astigmatism.

So now I have a prescription for glasses, and the relief of knowing that I'm not actually such a stressball that I give myself headaches no matter how much meditation or relaxation I do. I just have to make it through the next ten days until my specs arrive.

Will post before and after pictures once they're here!

Ah, the joys of approaching 30.

Plantar faciitis appears to be gone. Podiatrist has prescribed orthotics to keep it that way.

However, now I've had headaches all week, centered behind my eyes, and the pain subsides when I close my eyes for a period of time. It's not related to light, either, and I have no other migraine symptoms. Given that both my parents wear glasses and I haven't had an exam in ten years or more, I've made an appointment for tomorrow at my Costco's optometrist.

Still losing weight, about a pound a week. It will still take me two years or more to get to a "healthy" BMI, but right now getting out of obese is all I really care about.
